Dropbox adds document scanning, deeper integration with MS Office

Dropbox is getting a huge update today with a new set of productivity tools and features.

You’ll now be able to use the Dropbox mobile app to scan documents such as receipts, whiteboards and more. If you have a business account, you’ll be able to search inside the scans too.

Dropbox is also integrating more tightly with Microsoft Office. Click on the new plus button to create a new Word, PowerPoint or Excel file right from the Dropbox app. They’ll automatically be configured to sync with your account, of course.

Dropbox is also making it a lot easier to share files from your desktop. Assuming you have the Dropbox app installed, you can simply right click on a file or folder and share right to your account, instead of redirecting to the web or copying a link first.

Meanwhile, though Dropbox has long supported version history, you’ll now be able to preview older versions of a file before restoring them – useful if you don’t know exactly which copy you want to go back to.

Finally, sharing is a bit more powerful. You can now share a single file with a specific group of people, and all users can set view-only access for shared folders. Previously this was only available for business accounts.

The updates begin rolling out to all users today. For more info on the updates, check out their website here.
