Eilean Donan Castle is widely considered as the most famous and photographed castle in the whole of Scotland, and pictures of the castle has been splashed on countless calendars, postcards and guidebook covers. It has also been featured in movies such as James Bond (as the Scottish HQ of MI6, no less).

Eilean Donan Castle is idyllically located on a small island in the western Highlands of Scotland where three lochs (or lakes) meet — the Lochs Duich, Long and Alsh. An arched, grey-stone bridge connects the castle with the mainland, and hundreds of thousands of tourists stream across the bridge every year to explore this beautiful fortress. With its weatherworn crenellations, tidal-island location, stone footbridge and forested mountains bordering the lochs, it is a place of serene beauty and is the perfect symbol of romanticised medieval life.

The island and the castle, according to legend, got their name from Saint Donnan of Eigg, a 7th-century Christian priest who established a following in the area. (He was later beheaded in 617, along with 52 of his followers, by pirates while saying the Mass). The castle was built in the 13th century and served as a stronghold for Clans MacKenzie and MacRae, until it was partially destroyed in the Jacobite rising. It was rebuilt in the 20th century and opened to the public in 1932.
