The Pragser Wildsee, or Lake Braies (Lago di Braies) is a lake in the Prags Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy. It is located in the Prags valley and belongs to the municipality of Prags.
From the parking lot, it’s a good 15-minute walk on a narrow forest path. And when you finally see the Pragser Wildsee, your breath will surely be taken away: turquoise waters surrounded by dark green forests, and the mighty rock walls of the surrounding mountains which seem to fall into the water quite dramatically.
It’s no wonder that the Pragser Wildsee is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites and is an absolute must-see if you are in the region.
From here, you can take numerous mountain hikes in the surroundings — hike the Dolomites high route no. 1 and enjoy breathtaking views of the lake from above. If you would rather take it easier, you can walk the 3.5 kilometers around the lake or borrow one of the historic rowing boats and enjoy the mountain scenery from the water.
During the summer, you can also take a dip into the cold water, which is really quite cold. After all, the Pragser Wildsee is up to 36 meters deep and lies in the shadow of tall mountains. But one thing is guaranteed: crystal clear waters that you rarely find these days.
If you are short on time, drive to the historic Hotel Prager Wildsee, which is located on the shore, and enjoy the panorama from there.
