Dubbed as the “last pure land on our blue planet”, Yading Nature Reserve has become a popular destination for hiking. Located in the city of Daocheng in Sichuan province, China, the mountains are a sight to see, and its significance within the Buddhist community makes it a well-loved attraction. The snow-capped mountains, steep cliffs, crystal clear lakes, vast pastures, as well as the dense woods compose a harmonious utopian land. It was officially declared a nature reserve for the first time during the end of the 1990s.
Yading’s Natural Reserve was discovered during the year 1928 by a man named Dr. Joseph Rock. It has been billed the world’s last Shangri-La. Tibetans make it a point to make a pilgrimage to the reserve at least once during their lifetime. Dr. Rocks had pictures and writings pertaining to Yading published in National Geographic in 1931, making the world aware of Yading for the first time. This was the first time Yading pictures had been shown to the world.
These pictures were later used as a basis for author James Hilton’s “Lost Horizon” novel published in 1933. The area of Yading was known by Tibets living in the area some 800 years before the rest of the world knew. Many foreign travelers were not familiar with Yading until 2015 when Yading has been listed in many guidebooks aimed at tourists interested in visiting China.
The most important spots in the scenic area are the three sacred snow-clad mountains: Mount Chenrezig, Jambeyang and Chanadorje. They are completely separated from each other, but within a short distance, forming the shape of a triangle. The three mountains are worshipped as embodiments of three Bodhisattvas: the Bodhisattvas of Mercy, Wisdom, and Power, respectively — three things that the Buddhists believe are necessary when it comes to achieving enlightenment. Local Tibetans believe that the three holy mountains protect them and if one sincerely makes pilgrimages to the three mountains, his wishes will come true.
Visitors come here today to admire the spectacular nature and have a memorable hike in the mountains. Starting from Yading village, it can take 6 days to complete the trail around the sacred mountains. The air is fresh, the skies are blue, the water from the streams is clear and drinkable and the place isn’t that crowded yet, making Yading Nature Reserve more special.
